Mr. P. Nathan left Auckland last evening for Wellington. The Hon. W. J. Ceddes arrived from Wellington this morning, and is staying at the vStar Hotel. Mr. T. J. Watts, Newmarket, is going to Wellington for a few days. He leaves by to-night's express. Mr. Grpville Walker leaves Auckland for Whangarei to-day. He will return in a few days. Mr. and Mr 3. J. B. Starky, of North Canterbury, are at present staying at the Star Hotel. Dr. S. Fitehett, C.M.G., is leaving for Wellington this evening, accompanied by Mrs. Fitehett. Mr. F. H. Claxton, chairman of the Thames Valley Electric- Power Board, returned to on Tuesday night, after a visit to Australia. Commissioner and Mrs. R. Hoggard, territorial leaders of the Salvation Army, are visiting Wanganui during the weekend, and will be the guests of Mrs. J. Underwood, of College Street. Gray, at present superintendent of the Canterbury sub-district. Mr. William Devinish Meares, aged 76 years, died at Christchurch on Wednesday. For many years he occupied a prominent position in the lire insurance business, latterly being general manager of the Alliance Assurance Company. — (Press Association.) The Very Rev. T. J. McCarthy. Superior of the New Zealand staff of Marist missionary fathers, arrived from Rotorua yesterday. Rev. Fathers Herring and McCJrath are also in town, and all three will be associated in tho mission which opens at St. Benedict's on Sunday next. The Rev. E. Palgrave Davy, of Bayswater, superintendent of. the New Zealand Children's Mission, has received an invitation from the committee of the Victoria Sunday School Union to visit Australia for the purpose of organising sand services and pastimes on the beaches for young people, and to address the pupils of the schools and colleges in the State of Victoria. Mr. W. R. C. Macpherson, accountant of the Wanganui branch of the National Bank, has been appointed manager of the bank's branch at Nelson, in succession to Mr. Cecil King, who is shortly retiring on pension, after 48 years' service. Mr. Macpherson is leaving Wanganui early in November, and will be succeeded by Mr. C. F. Bruce, at present chief bill clerk in the local office. Sir William MacEwan, the famous Scottish surgeon, now aged 75 years, who was last week in Wellington for about a day and a half on board tbe Tahiti, en route to Australia, received a very cordial welcome from some of his former New Zealand students, of whom there are several in Wellington. He is a remarkable man, who has been president j of the British Medical Association and i is now president of the International Society of Surgery, in which capacity he will attend the forthcoming Australian Congress of Medicine.
