CHASE OF 5000 MILES.

OLD ILAT3 'RECOVERED. Evidence was given at Sow Street in connection with charges agatnst Samnei Gilbert, diamond merchant, for whose arrest Detective-Sergeant Magrtdge XMds a. Journey of over 12,000 milee. Gilbert wu arrested at Monte Video on instructions sent by wireless. The charges agslnst bim were:— Obtaining by falee pretence* diamond earrings, Tsiae £125. Stealing .platinum and fO]d watctif a, raTOe £222. Stealing a cold watch and other articles, T&lne £100. Obtaining by Mse pretences £100. It was alleged that a Jeweller, of Hatton 'Garden, was asked by Gilbert for a pair of two-stone drop earrings, for which he said he lad a customer. Gilbert promised to pay lor them within on boor or to retnrn them. Before this, declared connsel, Gilbert had met a diamond merchant named Abrahamson, and had obtained a certain amount ot jewellery on a similar understanding. Later It was found the man had obtained a passport for France, Belgium, Germany, and the Argentine. Going back still further. In June, 1922, It was alleged that Gilbert obtained £100 from hie landlady, Mme. Jeanne Antin, sayina he wanted to go to Germany to buy goods. He deposited with .her as security a box which, he said, contained his personal property and Jewellery. After he left in April this year the hoi was forced open, and was found to contain only rubbish. Relating how she lent Gilbert £100, Mme. Autin eald she was given as security a box which Gilbert said contained Jewellery and other property worth £500. When the box wae forced open it was found to contain only a pair of sheets, two pairs of curtains, and a lot of old hats and ties. Gilbert was sent for trial.
