A PRISON MUTINY.
ATTACK ON GUARDS. PRISONERS WITH PISTOLS. NEW YORK, October 4. An unsuccessful attempt by three^ convict desperadoes to escape from the State Penitentiary at Eddysville, Kentucky, resulted in the death of one of the guards, aud serious injury to three others. The desperadoes, using automatic) pistols which had been smuggled into the prison, fired at the keepers while 6000 prisoners were at breakfast. The latter, however, refused to join in the outbreak, and the mutineers rushed to the main entrance, but the presence of reserve guards eauscd them to change their course. They dashed into an empty dining hall, "where they erected barricades against rifle fire, which was continued all day. The desperadoes are still holding out. Nobody knows the quantity of ammunition the mutineers hare obtained. The prison officials admit the helplessness of the situation, and hope that hunger will force capitulation. Otherwise, the officials declare they may resort to bombimr. or the use of tear gas.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
