EXPANDING IMPORTS. The exports from New Zealand in July totalled £2,642,354, as compared with £3,728,565 in the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of £1,086,211, equal to nearly 30 per cent. For the seven months ended July 31 last the exports totalled £33,724,687, aa against £30,620,931 in the corresponding term of last year, an increase of £3,103,750, equal to slightly more than 10 per cent. The imports in July last were valued at £3,643,444, as compared with £2,204, 622 an increase of £1,438,822, equal to nearly 65 per cent. For the seven months ended July 31, 1923, the imports amounted to £24,648,012 as against £18,393,094 in the corresponding seven months of last year, exhibiting an increase of £6,255,918," equal to about 32 per cent. The balance of trade in the two periods is shown in the table appended: _ • 1923. 1922. An examination of the details of imports discloses the fact that no small amount I of thft increase is due to the import of I what may be termed luxuries. Thus for seven months of this year the motorvehicles imported into the country numbered 6797, valued at £1,232,973 as compared with £319,454 in ' the I corresponding period of last year The increase under this head' is f913,519; motor-bicycyes show an increase of £54,787; rubber tyres, tubes, covers, other materials and parts for motor-vehicles and motor-bicycles in ' creased £209,909.
