ROAD REPAIRING.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I read by Thursday's "Star" that rapid progress is being made with the Great South Road paving. J would like to know how long a local body can close p. public road against vehicular traffic? "Portions of the Great South Road should have been opened for two-way traffic months ago. The controlling authority will say "that it is still under construction," but what I mean is why do not the tramway finish off their track to the second rail so that vehicles can use the road in safety. Then there is the Green Lane crossing. Why keep this closed for so long a period? It has already been closed for six months, and is likely to be closed for another three months at least. The crossing can be done in a muck quicker time and without any extra expense to the contractor. Another instance of inconvenience to the public was the contractors for Manukau Road, Epsom, tarring the footpath on the open side of the road, when the other half of the road was closed, and sports were on at Alexandra park. I am just wondering what is going to be the end of this closing of highways. Kewmarket is the latest to follow. Why cannot half the street be closed at a time? While on the matter of roads, I would like to draw your attention to the condition of Beaumont Street, Freemans' Bay, a tramway track has been laid along this road and the road has been left in a. most disgraceful condition. It is a wonder that no one has broken a leg or a vehicle broken a spring or axle. If an accident occurred the people for the condition of the road should foot the bill.—l am. etc.,
