(To the Editor.! Sir—ln view of the fact that the Teachers' Institute has turned -down tfibie reading during school hours, proI ?f bly T the y their limitations. May I be permitted to outline the procedure current somewhere about the year j 1875 when the schools under the board j were opened in England. I attended one : from the opening, and indelibly fixed on 'my mind is the impressive figure of the head, Mrs. Williams. School was opened by the reading of the collect for the week. We repeated the Lord's Prayer, and then we learned by repetition such : portions of the Bible as were deemed most suitable, and several appropriate psalms. The lesson occupied about 30 minutes. There was nothing in it that would hurt the susceptibilities of teacher or taught. This has always remained with mc as a, dignified and reverent way of conducting the daily opening of a school and over which no ] controversy should arise. First impressions are lasting ones.—l am, etc., TAX.
