IMPROMPTU OCEAN RACE.
"WON BY CANADIAN CONSTRUCTOR. A MATTER OF FOUR HOURS. An impromptu race from Montreal to Auckland over 9850 miles of sea wae j completed to-day, when the Canadian Constructor dropped anchor in the stream at 2.40 a.m., 3 hours 50 minutes ahead of the Trelevan, her rivaL The steamers, belonging respectively to the Canadian Government Merchant Marine and the Ham Line, were on the Montreal loading berth together for New Zealand j and Australia, and proceeded to Sydney (Cape Breton) for final loading. The Trelevan cleared on August Ist, and left Balboa, on the Pacific end of the Panama Canal, on the 13th August at 4.40 p.m. The Canadian Constructor cleared on the 3rd and left Balboa on the 14th at 3 p.m. On the run across the Pacific similar weather was experienced by both vessels, with somewhat unsettled conditions for the last fortnight. The Trelevan's best day's run for the 'voyage was 202 miles on August 24th, while the Canadian Constructor's best run was 323 milea yesterday. The Canadian Constructor is a modern cargo vessel built in 1921. The Trelevan was built in 1914.
