CHAMBER OF lr (By Telegrapl). —Own Correspondent.) WHAXGAREI, this day, There was a good attendance at laet Mrt'e meeting of the Whangarei hamber of Commerce, Mr. R. G. Hoak- j nsrs presiding. | The Auckland Chamber wrote statin* , hat under the revised constitution the ; resident for the time 'being of the Vhangarei Association became a memier oF the Auckland Chamber, and exending a hearty invitation to the presilent to visit Auckland. The compliment vas acknowledged with expressions of atisfaction. The Postmaster-General wrote re?retjng that the request for an extension ;o thrice weekly of the Onerahi-Parua ?ay butter factory rural service to the 'atua Bay Tost Office could not 'be fully net, as the Drpirtment would not be van-anted in iir-urrin? the expenditure. Authority had been given, however, to iccept an offer by the contractors for he Onerahi-Parua Bay delivery to exend the service once weekly, one way >nlv. to the Parua Bay post office, at au tdditional subsidy. A communication from Mr. Murdoch, U.P.. adviser! the Chamber that the Postmaster-General had informed him ;h e Whanjrarei Post Office was to be instituted'a Savings Bank ledger office, md that as a result of this arrangement ocal depositors would soon 'be under no Usability in the matter of withdrawals. Fhe actual date of the change will be innounced shortly. The Chamber decided to support the Auckland District Committee of the Department of Industries and Commerce in the following resolution: "That thie jommittee regrets that the shipping lompanies have not yet made any announcement of special fares to England iuring the British Empire Exhibition, md trusts that a satisfactory announcement -will be made at an early date, raville Chamber of Commerce asking the kiews of the Whangarei Chamber with regard to holding a combined Xorth Auckland District Court at the 1924 Auckland Winter Show. The matter will be considered by the committee of the Whangarei Winter Show, in conjunction with the Chamber, but owing to Whangarei'e success for the past two years in the matter of its court at Auckland, it is not thought likely that it ■will sink its identity at future shows by withdrawing that court. Mr. W. L. Lawrence, of Paeroa, who Jβ moving in the matter of organising district courts at Auckland and Hamilton Shows, to advertise the Hauraki] Plains and Thames districts, wrote seeking information regard- | ing details and cost of the Whangarei court at Auckland also its value as an advertisement for the Whangarei district. It was decided to supply Mr. Lawrence with the information asked for. Mr. A. Briscoe Moore wrote on behalf of eeveral settlers of the Purua-Moenga-wahine district as follows: "We are endeavouring to obtain a Government grant of £1000, as a £ for £ subsidy, on a loan which has been already raised (by extra rating) and expended in j metalling from Puraa towards the new j Hikurangi river bridge. There is at pre-1 sent approximately three miles unmetalled, between the end of the existing metal and the bridge, which we wish to have laid. There is very heavy traffic over this three miles of main road, towards which three roads, chaining a rich and almost undeveloped "tract of country, I converge at the bridge. A good metalled Iroad as far as the bridge would inevitably draw all the produce of these many thousands of acres to and through Whangarei. If a good outlet is not provided, there ie a considerable risk that as the back country is developed the trade from it will be in the direction of Kaikohe and Dargaville. It is, therefore, of interest to Whangarei to make certain of this traffic. I am directed to respectfully request that your Chamber use its influence in helping mc to secure ;the necessary grant of £1000 for this I work. It is also worth mention that the metalling , of this stretch would do much to encourage settlement in an area of ; several thousand acres of untouched bush j i land, with resultant increase in business ; for the town of Whangarei." The Cham-1 jber decided to do all possible to assist l the settlers to obtain the desired sub-. sidy and to make representations on | their behalf to the Government j immediately.
