THE BRESLAU RIOTS.
OUTBREAK CHECKED. "WORKERS ASSIST POLICE. ISO CASUALTIES. i (By Cable.—Ftess Association.—CoD.vrtsbt.) LONDON, July 23. i Messages from Breslau state that for . several hours the Silesian capital was in the hands of a mob which looted shops and cafes. The police were ordered to delay the use of arms as loug as possible, but finally the streets were cleared with carbines and sabres. About 150 people were injured, and over 1000 arrests were . made, though most of those arrested were soon released. The Socialist Federation of Trades Unions offered to help the police to restore order, and its assistance was accepted. The cause of the riots was the rise of prices, which has been so rapid recently that the new scale of payment provides for an increase of 270 per cent on the wages that prevailed in June. —(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
