CELEBRATION OF JUBILEE. BANQUET LAST NIGHT. A banquet was Held last evening is the Tiffin in continuation of the celebration of the jubilee of the St. Patrick's branch of the Hibernian Australasian Catholic Benefit Society, which was largely attended. The president, Mr. M. F. O'Brien, was in the chair. Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Liston, Coadjuator Bishop, and Chancellor Holbrook and other representatives of the church were present. Bishop Cleary, in proposing the toast of the' Hibernian Society, said he was chaplain to one of the branches 35 years ago. He claimed that the society had brought to this country all those attributes that | made for good citizenehip and the wel- i fare of the State, as it spread the p'ria-1 ciples of democracy and liberty wherever [ it took root. Messrs. C. Colhoun, J. J. O'Brien, and W. Kane responded. The latter gave a resume of the membership and finances during the past 50 years. The following sums had been paid during the half-1 century: Death benefits, £10,750; medical J fees, £5250; death claims, £2900. The amounts now to credit were: Sick and funeral fund, £3111; management fund,, £580; other funds, £342; total, £5933. The toast of "The Hierarchy and Clergy" was proposed by Bro. D. Flynn and responded to by the Rt. Bey. Dr. I Liston and Chancellor Holbrook; "Ireland j a Nation," by Bro. M. J. Sheahan. Other! toasts included: "Kindred Societies," by | Bro T. Kellv, responded to by Bro. John McLeod, Manchester Unity; "The'Ledies," | by Bro. Jennings—Bro. F. J. O'Meara i responded; "The Press," by Bro. James Smith. The following musical items were rendered: Pianoforte solo, Miss N. Griffin- song, "That Old Irish Mother! of Mine," Mr. Dickeon; song, "The! Cruiskeen Lawn," Miss N. Sheahan; "Danny Boy," Miss Smith. The accom- ' paniments "were efficiently played by Misses Nellie Ormond and Higgins. Proceedings were terminated by all present "God Save Ireland" followed by "God Save the King." j
