ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

KORTHCOTE DEFEATS THISTLE

NORTH SHORE DOWNS PONSONBY

PHILMEL UP AGAIN.

The chief game at Victoria Park was the contest between Xorthcote and Thistle, two teams which are showing top form. The game, witnessed by 2000 spectators, resulted in a very lucky win for the marine suburb side by one goal to nil, the score being obtained just before the call of time. Thistle had rather the better of the play, especially

in the first half, when they outmanoeuvred their opponents and kept them penned in defending their goal zone. The ground was heavy, but conditions were favourable.

The main attraction at the Domain was the North Shore-Ponsonby fixture, the Shorcites somewhat rehabilitating themselves in favour by running out winners to the extent of two goals to nil. The game was not productive of very interesting football and Shore's two goals, one scored in each half, were the result of lucky breakaways from halfway. About a thousand spectators attended.

The other match on the Domain was that between Harbour Board and V.M.C.A.. the latter team having a surprise win by two goals to one. rhilomel met and defeated Brotherhood at the Devonport Domain hy four goals to one. About IoGO to 2000 spectators enjoyed the game, which was strenuously "contested throughout, despite the final result. At half-time Philomel had a goal to their credit, but in the second spell managed to break through twice within a couple of minutes. Brotherhood, however, fought hard, tmt had to give way to another goal, after which Brotherhood was rewarded. Philomel capped their effort by a further goal in the closing stages.

NORTHCOTE V. THIST-E.

Northcote kicked off facing tbe sun. and a brief skirmish carried into Thistle terrltorv. where a centre was missed by Knott. A long kick by Metge was cleared hy Anderson for Shields to be pcnnlised for trlpping. Thistle's right wing now got into motion. Go©< york by Dodds saw McDonald shoot well, but MeAneny was safe. A moment later the Thistle right wing missed when a tine chance presented itself. Tremaln and* ilaker initiated an attack, but Ferguson found the side line. Again Dodds opened up »«• K«an, who sent across nicely, but McDor Vas offside. Thistle maintalned until Burford sped down the line to centre for Britain to trick tb<?«ttackers and send on lo Williams, who quickly placed Northcote on defence. A hot attack saw McDonald. Stewart, and then Kean have shots. MeAneny saving the fort. Thistle were now playing with fine combination and a fine effort was jnst saved by Metge. who came across in front of the goal mouth. Then Baker got into action and sent to Tremaln. who held on too long and was beaten for possession, operations being transferred to the Northcote corner, ■where' Thistle were awarded a free kick. Then Knott broke oft* down the side-line to centre dangerously. Anderson fell In frustrating, but Britain came to tbe rescue and gave a long kick to Dodds for McDonald to make a dashing effort. McAneny stopped It. A foul against Metge for holding Stewart evened matters. Again Northcote were penalised, and Williams' following corner gave the bUie an anxious time, bnt Knott cleared. Another comer from McDonald was close, and a goal kick to Northcote relieved the pressure. Tremaln then led Northcote on a smart invasion, but Brlttain and Ferguson cleared.

In the second spell Alpe fouled Kenn, but Nothcote took the offensive for Brittaln to force a goal-kick. The defenders cleared, and Northcote, now playing the one-hock ga—e. Williams aud Kean hard fruitless shots. The Northcote backs were periodically breaking away, yet Thistle's rear division wns playing trickily and confidently, and Burford was caught waiting offside. A close attack by Tremaln and Baker was dangerous, but Anderson saved well by filching out. Burford brought it back, and another drive in by Baker was creditably offset by the Thistle goalie. Then Shields and Dodds got away, and a centre found McDonald, who. after a good run, shot to Kean. -who kicked into the teeth of the goal, but MeAneny saved brilliantly. Excitement ran rife as tbe ball travelled up and down tbe field, McDonald putting one over the bar from an angle. At length Burford sent Northcote onward, and a centre was taken by Tremaln, but the goalie tipped it over the bar. Another corner followed, and tbe blues were caught offside. Thistle worked to mid-field, and Burford sent tbem back, but could no. turn the ball against Whowell, and it went over the line. Again Thistle attacked, but Eck mau saved, and Northcote invaded. Tbe left wing went on, nnd a clever centre by Burford saw Anderson slip at the crucial moment, and, as the ball ran on. Baker came fast to smash it Into the net. The whistle called a quarter-minute later, with the scores:—Northcote 1, Thistle 0.
