BECKETT AND CARPENTIER.
MATCH DECLARED OFF. BECKETT HAXF CRIPPLED. (Received 0 a.m.) ■ • LONDOK, June 22. "Sporting Life" announces that tl»e Batch between Beckett and Carpentier is "off," as Beckett lias decided it is impossible to enter into a contract to meet Carpentier, at any rate until his hand is sound. "If Carpentier cannot wait," said Beckett, "he must go to America; maybe I will go too. They say that because I am sticking out against going into the ring half-crippled I am breaking faith with the public. My answer is that it would be a far greater breach of faith if I went into the ring out of condition." Carpentier also consulted Barker, who said his hand was worse than Beckett's. It is well for both combatants that the bout has been postponed.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
