DUMPING DUTY ON MAIZE.
SYDNEY MERCHANTS MISLED.
(Received 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Consternation has been caused among a number of Sydney merchants over the decision of the Commonwealth to impose a dumping duty of severipence per cental (or about fourpence per bushel) on maize imported from South Africa. The Customs Minister previously agreed on the necessity for importations, with the result that orders were confidently placed in South Africa, and some shipments were actually in Australian waters. A meeting of protest will be neld to-day.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
