NEWMARKET FIRE APPLIANCES

(To tbe Editor.}

Sir,—ln your issue of June 14 "Another Ratepayer" writes under the above heading, making special reference on two occasions to remarks made by myself at the recent public meeting held to discuss the Loan proposals. At the request of the Mayor I pointed out that the standard size of fire hydrants for New Zealand was 2J inches, and that Newmarket, in common with 123 other brigades, used 2J inch hose as against 11 using 2 J inch hose. The reference made to Auckland City being "out of step" was not called for, but if "Another Ratepayer" used the term "out of Dominion standard," then the answer is undoubtedly yes. It may interest your correspondent to know that there is a mutual agreement between that most capable officer, Superintendent Wilson, of Auckland City Brigade, and the suburban brigades to render mutual aid where necessary, and that in one part of the district the Xewniarket mains and hydrants are all that are available both -for domestic and fire prevention purposes, although the City side of the road is practically all built on. Anj- Newmarket resident is at liberty to visit the fire station any night to inspect the plant, eta., and see first hand how the borough is catered for. —I am. etc.. T. J. WATTS.
