STUDY OF THE STARS.
£.-,no. j FORMATION OF SOCIETY
ASTRONOMY IN AUCKLAND.
[ As a result of a meeting of those interested in the study of astronomy it was ; decided to form a society to be known as the Auckland Astronomical Society, i Professor P. W. Burbidge, the coni vener, presided over an attendance of about rsn persons in the physics lecture room at tlip Auckland University College. He said that recently he had found that a great number of people in Auckland were greatly interested in astro- . nomy, and that during his wanderings j around the college he had discovered a
valuable six-inch refracting telescope. The University College Council had generously given permission for the society to make use of the. instrument, which was a valuable one. It was decided on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. AY. H. Hamer, to form the Auckland Astronomical Society, with the avowed ohject of studying astronomy in the Auckland province. The yearly subscription was fixed at 5/, it being thought that such a small fee would enable all those interested to join as members. Those present were then enrolled members. Professor Burhidge informed the meeting that it would be necessary for the society to house the telescope on a suitable site. The matter of the site and the building was left in the hands of the committee. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson; president, Professor 11. W. Segar: vice-president, Mr. \V. IT. Hamer; committee. Messrs. F. R. Field, J. P. Artha, A. G. Lunn, and E. G. Jones. Mr. W. P. Gray was appointed the secretary and treasurer.
