PREPARING FOR WAR.

FRENCH POLICY CRITICISED

PEACE NOT DESIRED.

PARIS, June 4. At a conference of Socialists and Communists the statue of Jean Jaures, the French Socialist leader who was assassinated on the outbreak of the war, was unveiled. The following message from M. Anatole Trance, was read: "We used to be told that the war was to be the last to take place. Now they tell us to prepare for a new war, saying that wo shall have it in 20 or 10 years, and possibly sooner, or immediately if we leave the Ruhr, which would supply Germany with munitions. Has not our policy done everything possible to hasten a new war? We have not desired peace. Firm, pacific action would have been much more worth while, and resumption of commerce with our neighbour would have enriched France more than the enforcement of claims by armed strength, which has proved so costly."—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
