OUR NON-FAYING RAILWAYS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —People read from time to time about the railways not paying, and can they wonder why the business does not pay? It is the management that is at fault. For weeks past I have ordered timber wagons from day to day and have been told that none were available; at the same time there are wagons lying idle in the yards, and there are plenty of trucks to run to the Waikato Show" and not a great many people travelling in them. In addition I have been tofd there are some hundreds of wagons lying between Auckland yards and Penrose waiting repairs. If this is so, why are there not core men put on and these slight repairs attended to, thus increasing the income from the railways? The Government charge for loading banks and at the same time will not keep up a continuous supply of wagons to remove the goods. —I am. etc., TIMBER.
