A THAMES PIONEER. MR. EICHARD KKWDICK. Bom in Auckland 7ti years ago, Mr. Bichard Newdick, who died at Auckland Hospital on Saturday, spent tlie wliole of his life in this district. His parents vere amongst the pioneers of Auckland, judwere married in this city. Mr. Newjet was amongst those who tuok part a the first rush lo Thames goldfield, arriving t nere tue lirst week wit,l llii brothcr°Arthur. 3lr. Newdiek was one oi the original shareholders in the famous Long Drive mine, also the All Nations, close to the Shotover on the Kuranui Hill. Afterwards ~S\v. Newdicfc \rorked on various parts of the Hauraki Peninsula, includiii? Maratoto. and thirteen years in the \Vaihi mine. He was also farming flt ilauku later on. and epent the last 15 years of his life in Auckland, Ms residence being Buchanan Street, Glenmore. In his younger days Hr. Xewdick was a noted oarsman and a member of the four-oar inriggcd pig crew of the Thames Naval Brigade. The members were John and Richard jJsewdick, and Henry and Thomas Coldsirorthy. Mr. T. Black took the place of Mr. T. Goldsworthy in the crew v.-hen they won the amateur chamnionEliip at the Auckland Eegatta in 1574. acd the professional championship the next year.
