SUBURBS V. COLLEGE MIXES.

At the outset it was apparent that Suburbs were n much improved team, although still lacking the rtnish of their more experienced opponents. Ragged play characterised the commencement, with Suburbs ever on the alert for an opening. They had several chances, but their passing was appalling, their rushes invariably breaking down. Wilson, for Suburbs, was the first pln.ver to become prominent. He got the hall after some tight, work and meed down the line, passing the twentytive and looking very like a try-getter. The Rifles' defence was sure, however, and he was collared, play returning to half way. Hides then instituted n rush, in which the two Wilsons. Goodwin and Grierson handled, the ball being carried well into Suburbs' terrain, where the home renm were penalised, and Pilling sent a welldirected kick between the uprights. College Kifles :i. Suburbs 0. There was a spell Of desultory kicking in midfield, till C. Grey, Wilson, Lincoln, and Vallance became prominent for Suburbs, and they were instrumental in carrying operations into dangerous territory. A scrum ensued live yards out. and McDonald managed to scramble over, registering Suburbs' second try of the season. The kick failed. On resuming. Lincoln and Long were successful in stopping a rush by the Rifles' for wards, but the home team were on the defensive throughout Iliis. qtuirtPr. C. Grey in particular plnying a very sound and steady game. Interest run high when the final spell commenced with the scores still level. Begg. Hirst. Trezl.se and Fogarty were ■ working hard all the time. In a determined attempt to score. Suburbs swept into Rifles' territory, most of the backs participating-, but. an infringement gave Rifles the chance of reversing matters, [•"opart y nnd Goodwin getting away in great style, with scarcely any opposition. Fouarty transferred to Goodwin, and the last-named eluded C. Grey with a masterly swerve. leaving the Suburbs full-back sprawling on the line as the leather was slammed down, giving the visitors a hardearned victory :— College Rifles r. NORTH SHORE V. UNIVERSITY.

University opened out in passing, but the tackling was effective. D. Fairgrny broke away and, well . supported, placed the home side in good position. Again the blues initiated n rearguard action, but nippy work by Wilson and Goldwater profiting by tho mishandling of the hull by (lip Visitors, nnd worn replying by indulging In spasmodic passing houts. University up to this stage were also being outplayed in the forwards, and the tpmn wns not making its usual good impression. The University forwards took the offensive along close to the side-line, and as the ball veered to mid field in loose play Keene shot it out Kmart ly to Hamilton', who transferred on the. run to Dr. Park. The latter spurted across the Hue. Ron Park's kick just missed. Au exchange of Ion;: kicking saw (Jnldwnter dribble past Wiseman to the corner. where In a scramble for the ball Paltry scored. Boswell's kick failed to materialise. V\'ith tho total now level things took n brighter turn, and exciting rushes up and down the Held were the order with chances to each side. At length ('Diversity held the greens in their twenty-five, where Khore defended desperately until penalised for handling in the scrum, and Park placed a good low goal despite a strong wind which blew across the Held. Shore now worked up to within quarter distance, and University otTemled. for Reid to laud a splendid goal, kicked with good judgment. University t>. North Shore (>. A willing battle between the forwards marked the early part of the second half. University being smothered. Flynn and Sinclair having plenty to do. For the greens Buckridge was feeding the rear division, hut the backs lacked cohesion. Eventually a concerted University onslaught, headed by Shove anil Astlev. was joined by K. Park and Cashmore. White stemming the drive by forcing down. The students renewed open tactics, but sure tackling upset their combination and a free to Shore relieved temporarily. However, K. Park raced down the sideline and centred towards the goal. Astley ,fnm, ped to grasp the leather. Falling with it he seemed too far from the goal-line, but the only inches off. The reverse obviously took the sting.out of the home team's play, and University now set up vigorous attacks, and were desperately denied. Wiseman and McCulloiigh had shots at goal. Finally Jaggs came round a scrum, swinging his side into a long, dribbling manoeuvre, and the blues were lucky in staving off trouble. University were assertive oil time. University 0, North Shore 0. NEWTON V. EDEN. From the kick-off Kden took the ball into Newton territory, but Ilaues relieved and Karl had an unsuccessful shot at goal from a penalty. Newton pressed hard and had hard luck in not scoring twice. Kden cleared to niidflel.l. where Barton made a breakaway only to he smothered by Locke. Play bung in mldtleld for a time until Howarth and Moves broke away down thejine. The last named dropped a pass, but the Eden fullback. In missing a speculator, gave Thomas three points for Newton. Earl failed to convert. The bell rang for the first quarter with the score ."—0 to Newton. Newton's second try came as a result of a nice passing rush, in which forwards and backs participated. Tubherty crossed and Karl added the two points. Kden then took the offensive Mild from loose I - * +1 territory the hall came to Goodley. who, cutting jn cleverly, scored between the posts. Ills kick failed. Th.- whistle blew for half-time with the score: Newton S, Kden .'!. On resuming, Newton immediately took up the offensive, but Eden's defence was sound, and Newton lost several good opportunities to score by their backs cutting in too much. Just before the change over, however, the Newton hacks received the hall from a line-out and Howarth scored a try which Earl converted. A few minutes later Thomas crossed from a line-out and Karl coaled. Eden now took a turn at attack, and were awarded a penalty, which was taken successfully by Goodley. Newton came hack and hemmed Eden'in their own twenty-five, where, from a passing rush, Howarth cut in and scored. Earl wan unsuccessful with the kick, and the final whistle went with the scores: Newton *> T Eden ;; 3 Mr. M. Kronfeld was rereiee.
