(By Telegraph.—Press Association.. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The excitement in the potato market has subsided to some extent. Next week about 10,000 sticks will arrive in Auckland. Although potatoes have been carefully picked over where dug from flooded areas, there is a general fear that a proportion will not retain their soundness on the voyage. The Kaitoke is taking between 5000 nnd GOOO sacks, and it is understood that to secure this quantity very heivy re'e-tions at the port were necessary. The Whangape is due to sail to-day from Lyttelton. She I lifted 1000 sacks from Timaru, and 1:000 from Lyttelton. The Katoa has sailed North from Timaru with 2000, a total of 10,000 to 11,000. The Kaituna,'which j is due to sail late next week, has had her j space cut down, ami probably her canto will not exceed 4000 to 5000 sacks. iv 1 view of deliveries for shipment there has 1 been an easing temporarily in the local | market as far as merchants' offers are conj cerned. anil some purchases have be»n I made at £7« ton, though £7 10/ is tne j more general price. Growers, however, are ' almost Invariably holding for higher prices , particularly in cases where crops were not flooded. Varied reports, hut mostly pessi- . tulstie, continue to come to hand as to the condition of potatoes. Flue weather has j permitted digging to proceed apace, i Cofff is easier, and is quoted at £5 to ~;i 5/ per ton. Oats show no alteration. Millers are accepting good samples of wheat when offered.
