BERWICK BY-ELECTION.

"WIN FOR MRS. PHILIPSON. BIG MAJORITY RECORDED. — ! (Received 2 p.m.. LONDON. June I. The Berwick election resulted: — Mrs. Philipson (Conservative) . 12,000 Captain Robson (Liberal) 5,858 Oliver (Labour) 3.968 (A. and N.Z. Cable.) A FIGHT IN THE STREET. LONDON, June 1. Polling is proceeding actively at Berwiek-on-Tweed. where Mrs. H. Philipson, wife of the former National Liberal member who was unseated on an election petition, is contesting the seat as a Conservative. There were scenes of wild enthusiasm on the occasion of Mrs. Philipson's final speech at the Corn Exchange. Afterwards Mrs. Philipson and her husband were placed in a car decorated with scarlet ribbon and dragged through the town by 40 sturdy fishermen, dense crowds cheering them frantically. Rival processions, with bands, met and indulged in a stand-up fight. The poll will be declared to-day.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)

Tlie election followed the unseating of. Mr. Philipson. husband of the successful candidate at this poll, for corrupt practice on the part of one of his agents. In declaring the election void which involved the disqualification of the successful candidate, so that he could not stand again for the seat, the Court expressed its sympathy with Mr. Philipson, stating that he had no knowledge of his agent's misdeeds. Mrs. Philipson, though opposed to her husband in politics, stood for the seat, and secured a "sympathy" vote which has given her an overwhelming majority.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
