THE TAXATION FIELD. LIMITING FEDERAL POWERS. (Received 11.30 a.m.l MELBOURNE, this day. The Premiers' Conference agreed that the Federal (iovernment should withdraw from a defined area in the field of taxation, in lieu of the per capita payments to the States. The States' Treasury officials arc to determine the extent of the field to be evacuated. It was also agreed to ask the British i (lovpriiment to co-operate wtih the Commonwealth in its policy of immigration in the direction of giving substantial contributions towards interest on loans for the States for the settlement of immigrants.
