j THE AUCKLAND BRANCH. ADDRESS BY HON. G. FOWLDS. The annual public meeting of the Auckland Auxiliary of the London Missionary .Society was held in the Beresford Street Hall last evening. The retiring chairman, Mr. J. Dykes, presided over a large attendance. The secretary's annual report was read and adopted, and the following allocations for contributions * to the total of £._J7 recommended by I the committee were confirmed: Mount I ! Eden £140, Beresford Street £130, Green J Lane £80, Onehunga £50, Devonport !l £40, Mount Roskill £20, Xewton £25, 8 Maungaturoto £20. New Lynn £15, '• Waipu £12, Thames £0, Western Springs ™ £3, Swanson £2. Tlie treasurer's report a showed that the total receipts for the II year were £603 19/11, and the expendi--0 ture £24 18/4. The officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. S. W. Smeeton; vice-president, Mr. J. Dykes; secretary, Mr. J. TV, Smith; treasurer, Mr. P. C. Totman; literary secretaries, Messrs. E. L. Broberg and J. Le'diard; Prayer Union secretary, Mr. A. G. Brown: committee. Revs. 11. Johnson, Ralph, and Jackson, Messrs. Paterson, Moyses, Greenman, Jarvis, Rowe, Kemp, t, and Matthews. a An entertaining account of his trip to 1- Papua in connection with the recent I- mission conference was given by the Hon. George Fowlds. The speaker re- -, ferred to the difficulties under which misy sionaries had to work among the h Papuans, and of the heroism displayed s by them in the Course of their duties. Work amongst the natives had been g going on for over fifty years, and very s I considerable results had been obtained, - 1 but there was not a simrle large village v j that had been wholly Christianised. Tt, t was possible to tell by the better appeare I ance of the natives the section which 11 had come under mission influence. A I number of customs of the Papuans, some lof them most degrading, had not yet I been eliminated. The presence of the ■ mission tended to prevent unfair dealings with the natives on the part of c unscrupulous traders.
