j OVER 7000 AT CARLAW PARK. | MARIST DEFEATS NEWTON. AFTER A FIXE OPEN" GAME. CITY TRIUMPHS OVER SHORE. EASY WIN FOR ATHLETICS. Somewhere between 7000 and 8000 people were present at the Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, and the takings at the jrate were f 154 S/6. The match between Marist and Newton on No. 1 ground was characterised by open play. which made the game one of interest to the public. Marist led by 11 points to nil by the time the final stage of the game was reached, until an unexpected turn gave Newton a try and a goal at the last minute. The ground again stood the severe gruelling, and vvas, indeed, in better condition than last Saturday. The Athletic team were just a little too good for tbe Richmond thirteen on No. -2 ground. They were superior in I the forward line, while the hack division played with combination that baffled the "Richmond forwards. Although the latter put up a fair defence. Athletic piled up a score of 37 points against their S. A good-sized crowd watched with keen interest, and frequently with excitement, the game between City Rovers and Devonport at North Shore. • City did all the scoring in the second half, winning by 24 to 10. NEWTON V. MARIST 0.8. Newton kicked off and provided an early thrill, when Ghent, of Marists, took the hull from the scrum and pnssed to Nelson. who threw forwnrd. Brown intercepted, and mnde n fine run to Mnrist's twenty-/ 1 five. Failure, however, to pnss in time to the side spoilt a likely chance of a score. Newton continued to press the Issue in Mnrist's ground, but the lntter recovered the next moment, and Stevens Initiated n fine movement, in which Brisbane, McNamara nnd Bass participated. Marists were seen In a succession of passing bouts, which were, however, met hy smart tackling on Newton's part. From play nt midfleld Brown opened up a sensational passing bout, sending the leather on to Quintall. O'Donnell came up In support, but -was not nllowed to be long In possession. Brown wns ngnin to the fore, nnd raced past Mnrist's quarter-flag, but, being n trifle late in passing, did not give Cloke on the outside a proper chance to secure the leather, which slipped through his hands nnd went over the line. Ghent came through smartly from a sharp tussle on Newton s quarter-line, and paßsed to Stevens, who exercised good judgment by throwing the oval well over to McNamara. That player carried the hall over the line, but was'not able to hold It. and Newton got in and forced. Newton took up the attack, and a strenuous interval ensued I in which both teams made herculean I efforts to break through the other's! defence. Marist pushed the attack well on I Ito Newton's ground, where Foss got pos- J ' session and sent on to Stevens, who nnd a fairly clear run In to score behind the posts. Stormont goaled. The spell ended : Mnrist 5. Newton 0. Piny wns continued to midfleld for a few minutes following on resumption of piny, nnd n good deal of the pace manifested in the first half had disappeared. Marist eventually broke away, and a passing rush gave the ball to Stevens, who bore the game well past Newton's quarter flag, and pasijcd to McNamara. who got across the line to score. Stormont's kick at goal went wide. Mnrist continued to press hard In nn Interval of piny which wns marked by smnrt passing and sharp tackling on both sides. Marist showed grim determination to score, but Newton got down to it with equal vim. meeting their opponents' strategies with counter moves, which mnde ihe game full of interest.
