STEAMER'S PROPELLING PLANT.
SEARCH FOR BETTER SYSTEM. Owners and engineers of ship.s are continuing their search for propelling plant which does better work in service than the reciprocating engine, states the British Corporation Registry: and they have under supervision some novelties in three ships like the San Benito, which are being built for the United Fruit Company with Cammell-Laird-Futhigar Diesel electric drive to a single propeller; and a Holt liner which is to have the Scott-Still engine. The machinery rules of the corporation now provide more fully for o:-l fuel installations, and the rulesfor shafts of internal combustion engines now embody a modification for fly-wheel clfect. The'committee of the corporation, however, do not consider that there is suliirient experience of this type of machinery to justify them in making the rules absolute instead of provisional.
