RATES IN THE CITY.

SAME. AS LAST YEAS. THE ESTIMATES ADOPTED. H is proposed by the City Council to strike the same rate as list year, beinjr a total of 3/11 in the £. Particulars of tlw proposal were contained in a statement by the Mayor to the Council last night. The particular rates proposed were as follows, the figures in parentheses being the rates last year: General rate, 1/9 (1/10) s library,'id (Id): hospital aid, 3Zd (4d) : drainage, 4d (3Ad) : sanitation, 2.'.<1 (3Jd) ; special interest rate, l/:i (1/1). In making a statement of the estimates on which these rates were fixed, Ntr. Gunson stated that the library rate was limited by law to a penny in the E. In the hospital and charitable aid -ate and the drainage rate the Council followed the demands of Hoepital Board and Drainage Board. In the sanitation leoount the chief charges were the colIrelion of refuse and the operation of ;hc destructor. The interest rate was :o cover, after transferring from the varims trading departments which provided ntereet on tlieir own loans, a sufficient imount to meet the Council's liability or interest on its loans. That the .'oiincil had kept this rate at a reasonible figure was due to the tramways, vaterworka and electricity departments >aying their own interest charges on ■apital outlay. The estimates for the year, which were ■onsidered, discussed and adopted, provided for total estimated receipts in rencral account of £220,061, and expenditure of £213.820 under all headings. paving an estimated credit balance of 17 141 as at March 31, 1924. The principal estimated receipts were: Rate of ]/!) in the £, say £133,000; icenses, £l!), 000; from waterworks iceount, £1.5.000; rents from city endownents. etc., £14,000: arrears of genera] ate and penalty, £5500: Town Hall hire, ■tc, £5500: fees. £5000; Zoo, £3500; )iiths, £3440: and balance in. hand at \pril 1, 11)23, £0171. The estimated expenditure was apporionetl between the following commitees for the works, etc.. coming under I heir control and administration: — ■'inance and legal. £H7,400: parks. :33.0Q(): works. £106,250 (including :<S2.)O for public health and sanitary, mil £5000 for special street works) ; iijniry, £1420. In addition, £5750 was illocated for special votes. Among the terns of estimated expenditure were:— osts of elections, loan polls and liceniiifr expenses. £4000. and Town Hall (■novations. £2000. in the Finance and -••jjal Committee's vote, and the followiiL- sppeial votes: University Board unci. £2000; blind appeal (provisional), :250: and Boys' Club, £500.
