WOMEN'S HOSTEL ON FIRE.
NEW ARRIVAL SUFFOCATED. (By Telegraph.— l'rcss Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday A fire attended by fatal results occurred in the Young Women's Hostel tonight. Apparently the fire broke out in a room occupied by Miss Uourlev, an immigrant, who arrived by the L'limaroa. Screams were heard 1 coming from her room on the top storey. Volumes of smoke rolling along the passage prevented a rescue until the unfortunate woman who, it id believed, was suffocated by smoke, was dead. The body was also burnt in places. WELLINGTON, this day. The origin of the fire in the Y.W.C.A. Hostel remains a mystery. The victim, Hiss Gourly, arrived from Sydney by the Uliniar'oa only yesterday morning and was to have proceeded this morning to her destination, which is at present unknown. Immigrants to arrive by the Rotorua to-day were to have been accommodated at the hostel to-night, but the authorities state that accommodation is now to be found for them elsewhere. Great difficulty in reaching the seat of the fire was experienced by the brigade, and as the nearest water hydrant was located in Wellington Terrace, considerable length of hose was required, thus causing delay.
