THE UPPER HARBOUR.
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. THE LOCK PROPOSAL. The half yearly meeting of the Auckland Upper Harbour Association was held at the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. The president, Mr. R. J. Eames. occupied the chair. The report of the executive, which was adopted, referred to the efforts put forward by the association for impreivcd transport of passengers and cargo, which had not altogether been fruitless. The president, mentioned that in consequence of amalgamation by purchase of the present interests, the immediate future seemed to hold the transport facilities in the control of one concern. His hope was that this would prove to the interests of the settlers, but if not the alternative would probably have to be the formation of a company on the lines he had previously outlined. The executive was increased to ten, Mr. W. H. Madill being elected vice-presi-dent, and Messrs. E. C. Walton, S. S. Rout (Birkdale), H. Day (Albany), and Geo. Clifton (Riverhead) added to the executive. Mr. \Vm. Blomfield, a candidate for the Auckland Harbour Board for the Waitemata County—Takapuna Borough seat, was present by invitation, and expressed his deep interest in the proposal to lock the upper harbour. This was necessarily an engineering scheme, but if it could be put in operation the advantages would be immense. The drawback to the districts was being subject to tidal conditions, and the lock would overcome this. Mr. Blomfield was thanked for his address. The executive was empowered to make full investigations into all aspects of the proposal, and to again approach the Harbour Board at a future date.
