WAR FUND BURSARIES.

GRANTS TO SOLDIERS. 3*l NAT, EXTENSIONS MADE. (By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.) WELLINGTON", Friday. At a meeting of the executive committee of the National War Funds Council, the renewal of national war funds bursaries to returned soldiers whose university courses had been interrupted by w-ir service was reviewed for the year 19_."----1f1'24. Before tlie establishment of th- Re patriation Department, the National Council, recojrnising the disability students had suffered through their enlistment in the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, offered assistance to soldiers who desired to continue their university studies, and. early in 1910, educational grants were made to li!) students for a period covering from four to five years, according to the time required to complete tho course undertaken. On the establishment of the Repatriation Hoard, whose function it was to deal with thi* form of repatriation, the council agreed to bear the cost of the bursaries until the men selected had obtained their degrees. Up to March 31, ln_2. 43 students completed their courses, there being only two withdrawals from university colleges, both of which were due to physic; 1 .! disability. During the past year 13 students obtained their diplomas, iwc in agriculture, three in arts, two in dentistry, one in civil engineering, ana nve in medicine. There remain at Otago University 11 medical students now in their final year The reports of the Professorial Board being satisfactory, and the condition; governing the bursaries having been com piled with, the National War Fund; Council has granted bursaries to th< following students for the year ending March 31, l!)_4:— F. O. Bennett., J. H Beaumont. Alex. Gumming. J. A. _ Iverach, K. H. Dean. S. L. Geerin, A. H Harvie. E. H. Marenday. L. H. Marshall N. M. Matheson, and R. J. Maunscll, al of whom are in residence at the Otagt Medical School, Dunedin. This allot ment covers the final payments autnor ised by the National War Funds Coun cil under its original scheme.
