AUCKLAND SUMMER CARNIVAL.
WELLINGTON ALLEGES A FAILURE. DENIAL BY MR. M. S. DUN'S"". At a meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce held during the week, when a discussion ensued on the question of holding a carnival in the Empire City on similar lines to the recent Auckland summer carnival, it was alleged that a loss w6uld be the result of the Auckland fixture. When the report of the meeting in Wellington was referred to Mr. M. S. Dunne, the organiser of the Auckland carnival, he denied that there would be a log*, as suggested by the Wellington meeting. In fact, Mr. Dunne remarked that the objects of the carnival had been achieved. Despite the fact that over £1500 was expended in publicity, that sum waa money well spent. Certainly the time chosen for the holding of the carnival waa not the best, and he thought that waa a matter for consideration before next year, date *n fixed. Mo immediate profit was looked for, the money spent really provided propaganda to establish the carnival as an annual one. However, despite the fact that the committee's activities were somewhat curtailed, owing to the mi-understand-ing with the City Council, Mr. Dunne opined that when the final reaults were available, it would be found that a profit of about £_000 would be made. Regarding the remarks made in Wellington that the funds from the art union would have to go to make up the deficit on the week's functions, Mr. Dunne said that apart from the amount realised by the art union, the weekly fixtures returned a profit, despite the unfavourable weather that prevailed. That, said Mr. Dunne, proved that a week's carnival could be held in Auckland successfully, without the aid of an art union.
