WORK AT ARAPUNI.

SPECIFICATIONS NOW READY.

The specifications for the Arapunl Headworks Contract are expected to bo in the hands of the Government Printer in a day ox two. The contract will include a diversion tunnel, concrete dam, spillway, intake works, headrace excavation, and various other works. The power house work will be dealt with separately. The Public Works Department 13 about to construct some extensive deviations from the existing road from Putaruru to Arapuni, so as to provide a route suitable for bringing material to the works. The new road will be remarkably easy in grade, and will be metalled in the first instance by the Public Works Department. The contractor will maintain the road, probably using stone from the same quarry site from which it is expected he will obtain stone for the concrete work of the dam. The quarry site promises to last for many years as a possible source of supply of road metal, as much of the stone is above the level of the lake which will be impounded by the dam. Two large firms, one English and one American, have already repre-, sentatives in New Zealand inspecting! the site of the works, and it is anticipated that other firms will send; out representatives as soon as copies ofi the specifications reach England. The! contract will also be advertised on the' Continent and in America, and sufficient time will be aliowed to permit of firms abroad sending representatives to New Zealand as referred to above.
