A public mooting was addressed by Mr. C'lutha Mackenzie at Opotiki yesterday by way of a preliminary to the nppeal for funds towards the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial Fund for the l>lind. Mr. Mackenzie, Mr. K. S. Williams. M.P.. and Mr. Blake. Commissioner of Crown Lands to the newlyconstituted Gisbornc land district, were entertained by the local executive of the Returned Soldiers' Association. The Mayor, who presided, extended It welcome to Mr. Mackenzie as a soldier and as a man who was doing so much ill the cause of the blind. A fine of £5 was imposed upon .Tames Oliver by Mr. F. W. Platts, R.M.. at the Magistrate's Court. Tnumnniniti. yesterday, on a charge of having cruelly treated five horses. Evidence was given tha-t the timber wagon to which the horses were attached became stuck in the Wangnniii Kivor. In an endeavour to mnke them pull the vehicle out. the accused struck them with a piece of timber. The matter of a new site for a sirneI farm was considered by theAuckls»nd Acclimatisation Society last night, when it was decided that areas available should be inspected by a member !of the council. Attention was given a letter received from the Under-Seere-te.ry for Internal Affairs, in regard to the proposed issue of a separate 10/ licens! for the shooting of godwit. and it was agreed to inform the writer that provision would be mode for the issue of such a license to those who did not wish to take out the full game license at n cost of £1. Word was received by the society thnt the proposed conference at Wellington in regard to depredations by deer, oriirinallv fixed for Msirch 22. had been postponed until Annl 11. The prize for the best fancy dress (gentleman) at the Carnival Poster Ball on Wednesday night, has been awarded to Mr. Peter Dawson, "The Toreador."
