BIG SPEEDWAYS.
SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE. ACCOMMODATE 100,000 PEOPLK. (i'rom Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, March 15. Companies are about to bu floated in Sydney and Melbourne for the construction of motor speedways. Hie Sydney concern is to have n -ipital of £•250,000 and the one in Melbourne £12,000. It is proposed that the Sydney speedway when finished will accommodate lOif.ooo people. It is to lie elected at Maroubra, a seaside suburb about live miles from the city, where the grantin™ of a lease of 7.") acres has h?en recommended. Mr. Albert John Hunting, ti.o promoter, calculates that two years will Iw needed for the preparation ami equipment of the ({r-.iinJ. It will attract higher types of automobiles, and drivers from other parts, and greatly increase employment. The track, when Australia arrives at the stage of manufacturing her own machines, will provide a valuable testing ground. It is also pointed out that a big revenue will accrue to the Government in fares, amusement tax, and possibly totaiisator tax. The site for the Melbourne speedway is at Batman Avenue, close to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This site is about a mile from the Flinders Street Central Station. The scheme, though much smaller, is similar to that of Sydney.
