TRADE WITH CANADA

COMMISSIONER'S IMPRESSIONS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) VANCOUVER (8.C.), February 23. Mr. W. E. Duncan, a prominent Canadian trade representative, recently returned to Canada after a six months' visit to New Zealand and Australia. In an address before the Vancouver Board of Trade, Mr. Duncan told of his visit to Australasia an the representative of twenty-nine Eastern Canadian manufacturers and of the reception he was accorded. "In New Zealand T found the people 100 per cent British, keen and somewhat critical," said Mr. Duncan. "The buyers in both New Zealand and Australia deal as directly as possible with the actual manufacturer and generally demand the name of the factory with fullest details. Therefore it is necessary for merchants :•! to offer poods unless they have a solid contract with the manufacturer." Mr. Duncan reported good results from his trip and was only handicapped by Canadian manufacturers being unable on account of heavy domestic orders to fill "repeat" orders for export trade. "The hospitality and facilities extended to us were exceptional; government officials gave us every opportunity to secure information. Manufacturers and merchants were only too nnxious to assist in cultivating trade with Canada: and, while the Old Country had preferential tariff, both New Zealand and Australia look to Canada coming alongside," said Mr. Duncan.
