FAREWELL TO MR. J. BROOK

FORTY YEAR* AS TEACHER. I Mr. Julian Brook, who has completed 21 years as headmaster of the Birkdale school, and 40 years' service in the teaching profession, is retiring on superannuation and taking up his residence in the ; Remuera district. night the people of Birkdale! tendered Mr. nnd Mrs. Brook and family ' a farewell social in the Methodist Sunday School, there being a large attendance. Eulogistic references were made by the chairman. Mr. E. C. Walton (president of the Birkdale Fruitgrowers and Ratepayers' Association), and old residents of the district, of the efficient tuition ' imparted to the pupils passing through the school under Mr. Brook, and also to his energy in participating in the activities for the promotion of the. dis-j triet, in which he was ably assisted by : Mrs. Brook and family. The chairman handed Mr. Brook a'■ suitcase and travelling trunk from the I residents, and an address from the children was read by a pupil, accompanied by the presentation of a case of pipes. On behalf of the larlics of the district. Mrs. H. P. Chetwynd presented Mrs. Brook with a handsome set of china. Replying, Mr. Brook expressed his gratitude for the many expressions and tokens of appreciation of his residence | amongst them, and towards his family. He would always bear kindly remembrances of Birkdale. Vocal and instrumental items wt»re i rendered, and songs and recitations by the school children, and refreshments partaken of.
