INDIAN AND HIS PONY.
Xatha CWiiU, an elderly Indian, wm proceeded against by Inspector Noan Webster, of the Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The inspector stated that the Indian was cruelly whipping a pony he was driving in hie bottle curt, and' when interrogated, said the pony was his. but that he was sorry if he had done wrong. In a letter written to the Bem-h by an "interpreter." whose English was itself most difficult of interpretation, C'hhita said hie assault on the pony would not have happened if he had not heen "of unsound mind" at the time, and he asked Ins "Warship" to be easy with him on account of his age. I'hhita was fined £3. in default seven days' imprisonment. UNDIGNIFIED DESERTONColin Campbell I.iddell (20) pleaded guilty to having d<-:-erted from H.M.s. Chatham, and to having stolen a shirt, coat and trousers, the property of -Matthew Quinton. He had told a detective that he deserted at Wellington, and thought that by stealing lie would be dismissed from'the Navy. He was a Dunedin lad. The Chief Detective: He has a list of offences on the Navy record. Frederick Prim-o (23i, a convicted person, released from priori nn license, was t-ent to gaol for three months on a charge of having ctnlen the sum of £3. the property of Knbert Bun. it being at t lie Mtme'time stated that hi* license of release from the Prison Board would immediately expire.
