PAHIATUA FLOODS.
WORST FOR MANY YEARS. WATER INVADES HOUSES. FUNERALS UNDER DIFFICULTIES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PAHIATUA, this day. The Mangatainoka and Makakahi Rivers overflowed on Saturday, causing the worst flood known for many years. Water got in several houses in different parts of the district, there being eighteen inches in one residence at Mangatainoka. The approaches to Konini bridge were washed away, but repairs have Bince been effected by county employees which provide for light traffic. McFarlane's bridge at Konini and its approaches were washed away. Men are now repairing the damage, but the bridge will not be passable till Wednesday at the earliest. There were several slips on the roads and water over many bridges throughout the county. Water is lapping the bridge on the main road from the station to Pahiatua township. Cars had difficulty in getting through the current on the road. Many dairy herds -were not milked on Saturday evening, and pigs were washed away. A big slip is reported at Manawatu 1 and at Makuri Gorge. Two funerals on Sunday met difficulties, the hearse in one case being unable to get through the water from Mangamutu to Hamua cemetery, and a settler's milk cart was used. * The rain ceased on Saturday night.
