AFTER A LENGHTY ILLNESS. "TIMES" TRIBUTE. (From Our Sperlal Cor.-esponde!i'.i LONDON, December 28. In a tribute to the late Professor G. 5. Sale, whose death occurred after a long illness, on Christmas Day, the "Times" says of him,« after recounting the events of his long and forceful career:— "During his long tenure of his position Sale was undoubtedly the most potent influence in the academic life of NewZealand. He was a man of wide culture, stern demeanour, great force of character, and impressive personality. Over many generations of students he exercised a powerful influence. In 1874 he took a leading part in the negotiations which led to tlie reconstruction of the university system of New Zealand; and it was mainly through his influence that the local university in the South consented to merge its claims to an Imperial Charter, and become, with Canterbury College, an affiliated institution to the University of New Zealand. He sat on the New Zealand University Senate for over thirty years. He contributed to the "Classical Review" and other publications. "Professor Sale married in 1874," Margaret, daughter of James Boswell Fortune, of Ontario. He leaves a widow, one son, and one daughter- After his retirement and return to England his house in Bedford Park, W., was for years a favourite resort of visiting and retired New Zealanders. until ill-hea-lth compelled his withdrawal even from all social activities. For the last few years of his life he had been confined to his bed, but free from pain of any kind."
The funeral takes place this afternoon at Cowers Green. Sir Jas. Allen would have attended but owing to his absence from London is unable to do so. The High Commissioner and Lady Allen sent a wreath.
