CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. % SOME INTERESTING GAMES. EIG SCORE BY EDEN. There was very interesting play in tlie tliroo senior frames of the A.C.A. competition on Saturday afternoon, -when the weather was beautifully fine and the wickets hard and fast. The wicket on No. 1 area at Eden Park was a particularly easy batting pitch, and the Eden batsmen took advantage of it, against Ponsonby, to make 373 runs in three and a half hours, the chief scorers being Brooke-Smith 132, YVhelan 88, and Gillespie 56. On the No. 2 wicket Parnell 1 opened badly against the University bowlers, losing t'.ie first five wickets for 83 runs,' but Anthony defied the bowlers from the jump, and'with the assistance of the later batsmen he brought about a recovery, witU the result that the innings produced eventually 235 runs, Anthony carrying his bat throughout for 110. Ponsonby and University have barely opened their innings, the former losing one wicket for 18 runs, and the latter two for 20. North Shore did not make a hopeful showing against Grafton, and. with a place left for C. Dacre, their innings closed for 140 runs. An unexpected bowling performance by Elliott, who got four wickets for four runs, made matters interesting when iCrafton opened their innings, and the town 'earn had five wickets down for 63 when time was called, so that the game is now a very open one. NORTH SHORE V. GRAFTOK. North Shore won the toss and elected to .hat. l'rater and Gerrard opening the Hillings. Runs came very -low y. the batsmen finding the bowling difficult to pay It took nearly an hour to reach the lial'f-century. and after five more run*.had been added Crater was liowled by Hors- „„„' Elliott joined Gerrard and another good' stand was made, the newcomer liven ing up the play considerably. The board showed 102 when he miss-hit one from 1 Johnston to C. Snedden at point. The ! next tive wickets went for 24 runs, and the team, which was one man short owing to the alweni-e of C. Dacre. wno is playing in | the third test at Wellington, was dismissed i for HO. Grafton opened fairly well. HorsI pool and l'aterson carrying the total to .TS i before the latter was yorked. However. II he bowling of Elliott and Coates had the ii..Ttsmen completely beaten, and when stumps were drawn Grafton had lost five ! -wickets for on runs. At one stage Elliott had taken four wickets for no runs, and wound up with four for 8. I on a wicket that was fast, but sotnei vvh-U dead the Eden batsmen made the 1 must of tlie conditions, and Brook-Smith i "ot after the bowling early, making runs Iquicklv from the jump, while Irving and, Whelan followed bis example. Brook.Smith and Irving put on 9.". runs for the second wicket. and F.rook-Smith and Whelnn added another 124 for the fourth I wicket at which stage Brook-Smith went with the total at 2(>7. and with 152 to his I credit. The Eden skipper had played delislitful cricket throughout, and until he was close on his century he gave the j howlers no encouragement in the way of I chances but after that be had a number of "lives." Whelan and liillespie put on another S-j runs for the fifth wicket, but after the former had gone, the Ponsonby fast bowler. Grant, got on tbe spot, and the last five wickets added only 21 runs. !
