BRAVE DEED RECOGNISED.

THE WILTSHIRE WRECK. PRESENTATION TO SEAMEN KJ3HOE "BEST TRADITIONS OF THE SEA." The presentation of the sterling silver tankard from the chairman and directors of the Xew Zealand Shipping Company to Able Seaman W. Kehoe. who ' jumped into the sea to secure a line from the wrecked steamer Wiltshire last June, took place in the Auckland Harbour Board room this morning. There were present representatives of the shipping companies, including Mr. D. Carter of the Union Shipping Company, and Mr. A. H. Sinel of the New Zealand Shipping Company, members of the Harbour Board, and representatives of the Marine and Customs Departments. On behalf of the directors of the company. Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, chairman of tbe Harbour Board, made the presentation and reviewed the incidents leading up to Mr. Kehoe s brave act, when the Katoa. finding that it was not able to assist tbe Wiltshire ol sea went round to Trvphena Bay and sent a party overland to Rosalie Bay. By jumping into the water and securing the line from , the steamer. Mr. Kehoe carried out the best traditions of the sea. in that he risked his life for his brother seamen, and as a result of his act all the crew of the stricken steamer were saved. Tt was with much pleasure that the speaker presented Mr. Kehoe with the tankard, as a mark of the appreciation of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The presentation was made amid prolonged cheers. ln reply. Mr. Kehoe briefly expressed his thanks of the recognition of the . chairman and directors of the company. Speaking on behalf of the directors, Mr. Carter said that it gave tliem pleasure to thus mark their appreciation of such a brave deed as Mr. Kehoe's. He ! exemplified the sailor, who was a man of action, not of words. The tankard, which was sent out from London, bears the following inscription: "Presented by the chairman and directors of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Limited, to Able-seaman W. Kehoe. in recognition of his bravery in the rescue of the crew of the s.s. Wiltshire at Rosalie Bay. Great Barrier Island. June 1. 1922."'
