OBITUARY.

MR. F. G. RADCLIFFE

The interment took place yesterday at Onerahi, near Whangarei, of Mr. F. | G. Radcliffe, who had attained the age i of 59 -years. Deceased has been in ' business at Whangarei for some time, j but was well-known in Auckland. He ! arrived here from Liverpool, England, over 30 year sago, having come to New Zealand "for health reasons. He was a member of the V.M.C.A., Savage Club, Orchestral Society, and the Whangarei Bowling Club. In his younger days Mr. Radcliffe was a settler at Paparoa. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. MR. J. CAMPBELL. Mr. John Campbell, an old and e_teemed resident of Auckland, died in his 79th year, at his residence, 79, Great North Road, Grey Lynn. Deceased was the youngest son of the late Mr. Archibald Campbell, and with his father and three brothers arrived from T «iverary, Argyllshire, Scotland. ■> .* Auckland, 60 years ago, just prior to the outbreak of the Maori war. The family went through all the vicissitudes of the pioneering days of this country. Mr. Campbell was for some years in the Government service, and upon his took up liis residence on the family property at Campbell a Bay. Takapuna, where he resided for a lengthy period. When the estate was sold some few years a.go, be removed to Grey Lynn. M.r. Campbell had .been in failing health for the past cix .months and hi. end wa* not unexpected. MR. JOHN PATON. A resident of the Northern Wairoa district for over sixty years, Mr. John Paton, died suddenly at his residence, Arapohue, at the age of 84 years. Deceased arrived in Auckland <-bout fi." years ago, and was a member of the crew of the pilot boat for the Auckland Harbour Foard in the time of Captain Burgess. He settled at Arapohue a few ■years later, and has resided there ever since, being engaged in the timber and also the dairying industries. He had excellent 'health right up to the last, and attended to farm duties until quite recently. Mr. Paton was a prominent oarsman on the Wairoa River. his lengthy residence in the North he got together a very fine collection of kauri gum, •with which he won prizes at many shows. The .hardships of settlers, in the early days may be judged by the fact that to get to Auckland Mr. Paton had to take a whaleboat to Mititai, row to Helcnsville, walk across the isthmus to Biverhead, and continue the journey to the city by another -whaleboat. Mrs, Paton died eighteen years ago. Deceased is survived by seven sons and four daughters. There are also thirty-three grandchildren and ten great-grand-children.

MRS. M. CARROLL.. <By Telcgrapb.—Own Correspoa.ent.) MORRINSVILLE, this day. Mrs. Mary Carroll, a pioneer of the early sixties, died last evening at the age of seventy-eight. Mrs. Carroll arrived at Auckland from Belfast on the ship Ganges on February 14, 186.>, nearly forty-eight years ago. Her descendants are three sons, four daughter., twenty-two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Carroll, with her husband, who died a year ago, first took up -residence at Onehunga and two years later went to Thames on the occasion of the gold rush. After five years she left the Thames for Pukekohe. making the journey from Auckland in a dray, there .being 110 railway to Pukekohe then. The greater part of her New Zealand life -was spent at Pukekone. where rlic resided for nearlv4o years. She rememibered the trials of pioneering and the training of volunteers as a protection aa-a-inst Maoris, who were then troublesome. Deceased came to Motrinsville about 1912. when it who only a small township compared with what it is now. She had been closely interested in church work, latterly with the Methodist Church.
