OVERSEAS MAILS.

BUSY WEEK IS POST OFFICE. Although the Christmas rush of cards and packet* is over the post office staff has not yet had an opportunity for getting among the holiday-makers, for there has been a press of work in dealing with heavy overseas mails. No doubt the fact'that there is great difficulty in timing Christmas greetings and presents to the day when the receivers are in oversea regions accounts for the large size of these mails, and special efforts are being made to get them delivered as early as possible. On Wednesday a targe Australian raU.il arrived direct by the Ulimaroa. and this was followed by another Australian mail by the Moeraki. via Wellington, upon the heels of which the M*unganui. from San Francieco. reached Wellington with a big consignment of English and American mails. A portion of the Maunganni'e letter mail leached Auckland this morning, and will be delivered to-day, while the rest of the letter bags will get here this afternoon for delivery to-morrow. The newspaper part of the Maunganui'e mail will not get here till Saturday night, when it will be sorted out for the first following delivery., which will b P on Tuesday. By working over Saturday nteht the sorting and dee&atck staff of the post office will be able to Ccl their first rest of the holidays on Sunday and Monday, but they will have to be back on the job first thing on Tuesday in preparation for another larOT Australian nveil which is exnected that d». v fr° m Sydney by the Niagara.
