OBITUARY.

AIR. A. E. G. RHODES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Mr. A. E. G. Khodeß, who died this morning at his residence. Te Korata, Merivale, had been suffering from heart trouble for a considerable time. He was born in 18f>9, being the third son of the late Mr. George Rhodes, of Levels Estate, Timaru, one of Canterbury's earliest pioneers. He was educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, aud at Jesus College, Cambridge, England, where he graduated B.A. and LL.B. in 1880. In 1882 he was called to the Bar in the Inner Temple, and in the same year lie returned to New Zealand and began practice in Christchurch. Mr. Rhodes was a sound lawyer, and his opinions on financial matters were based 3n thorough understanding of finance. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1887, when he represented Gladstone, and three years later he was elected for Geraldine, practically the same seat under another name. In the general elections of 1893 and 1890 he contested the Pareora seat unsuccessfully, and subsequently was defeated for Avon. Mr. Rhodes was elected Mayor of Christchurch in 1901, and welcomed the present King and Queen. "Te Koraha." his beautiful residence in Merivale, was occupied by their Royal Highnesses during their visit to C'liristchurcli. Mr. Rhodes always took a keen interest in public affairs; for several years he was a director of the New Zealand Shipping Co., and in 1917 lie was elected chairman of directors, a position he held until early this year; he was president of the Canterbury A. and P. Association in 1894, president of the Canterbury Automobile Association, director and for some time chairman of directors of the "C'liristchurcli Press" Co., Ltd.. and director of the Waihi Gold Mining Company. During the war Mr. Rhodes was actively connected with Red Cross work, nnd received the Order of the British Kmpire. He was also keenly interested in sport. He was for a time president of the Canterbury Rugby Union, and also of the Christchurch Polo Club. In 1892 Mr. Rhodes married Miss Rose Moorliouse, daughter of the late Mr. J. \V. Moorliouse. He is survived by Mrs. Rhodes, and leaves one son, Capt. Tahu Rljodes, M.V.O. (who married the Hon. Helen Plunket, eldest daughter of the late Lord Plunket. one time Governor General of New Zealand) and one daughter, who is married to Major G. F. Hutton, D.S.O.
