OVERCAST BOXING DAY.
KEEPS MANY PEOPLE AT HOME LARGE COXCOUBSE AT ELLERSLIE. TOWN FULL OF VISITOR 3. (Holiday-makers were deterred hy the doubtful "weather yesterday from flocking abroad in the time-honoured Boxing Day manner and all the water excursions suffered as compared with previous years when the sun has 'been, more kindly. EUerslie, of coura, drew its usual Cup Day crowd, and ft is estimated that the great event was witnessed by over 30,000 people. Train, tram and motor vehicle handled this huge throng and expeditiously too. To-day the city is still full of people who are obviously on pleasure bent. Thousands of visitors from the country and other towns have been attracted for the festivities, and as there are races every day this week and again on Monday and Tuesday next it is certain Auckland will be full until the New Year celebrations are over. Most of these visitors have come in by train and tlie coastal boats, and if anything they more than make up for the overseas visitors that usually make Auckland their holiday centre at this time of the year. A large number of people have been coming down from Whangarei iby way of the new service over the Public Service line from Whangarei and then connecting at Huarau with the railway department's line. When the through connection is made—at present the passengers travel about half a mile by motor vehicle between the trains —there will be a big traffic over this route. In addition to the races at Epsom and Ellerslie the visitors to Auckland this Christmas and New Year are finding plenty of amusement. L«awTi tennis and bowling tournaments are being held, there are daily excursions by water to the many popular resorts, and the theatres and picture houses are being patronised by great crowds every evening.
