FRENCH CUSTOMS FRAUDS.
20,000,000 FRANCS INVOLVED. FOREIGN GUN SHIPMENTS. fßeceived 11 a.m.) PARIS December 26. Cuetoms frauds amounting to twenty million francs, involving a number of well-known business firms, are reported. It is stated that a number of foreign armourers and gunsmithe, taking advantage of the immunity of members of the military services from Customs dues on arms in their possession during demobilisation, took the opportunity to send surplus stocks to France, under the pretext that they were the property of those immune from Customs dues and disposed of them at a great profit. The authorities are tracking the offenders, and are hopeful of recovering a large portion of the unpaid dues.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.)
