INTERESTING CRAFT.

MOTOR VESSEL HATJKAKI,

MODERN APPARATUS

Considerable interest was manifested in the motor-vessel Hauraki as she lay nt the Queen's wharf to-day. The vessel arrived at Auckland last evening from San Francisco, and although she has already been once in New Zealand waters, this is her first visit to Auckland.

The Hauraki is practically a new vessel, having been completed in March last, and is the only motor-vessel owned by the Union Company. She was built by Messrs. VV, Denny" and Brothers of Dumbarton, Scotland, and her engines are from the North British Diesel engrine works at Whiteinch, Glasgow. She has n gross tonnage of 7112, and her dimensions are: Lenjrth 450 ft, beam 58ft, and draught 27 ft 10in. Her carrying capacity is 10,500 tons. With a full carßO the fuel consumption of the vessel is 15 tons daily. Sufficient fuel can be carried for a voyage of 30.000 miles. The crew required for this class of steamer is much smaller than the ordinary steamer, and the complement in the engine room of the Hauraki. besides the engineers, comprises three prcaseis and three wipers. A steamer of the same size would require about 18 firemen aud six trimmers. Electricity is the motive power for the auxiliary machinery on the Hauraki. In the engine room arc two 300 b.h.p. I'ligines, driving 215 k.w. electric generators. The usual engine room pumps, steering gear and winches for the six holds are all operated by electricity. Instead of the usual black-painted hull with yellow facings, that mark the ITnion Company's freighter?, the motorvessel has the green coat of the passenger steamers. She has incidentally accommodation for twelve passengers, but this has not yet been used. The Hauraki left San Francisco after loading on the Pacific Coast on October 1. and met with fine weather throughout the trip until last Saturday, when west-south-west winds were experienced. She brought 12,000 tons of cargo, including 4;>,000 cases of oil. The vessel is under the command of Captain D. Todd.
