"WEST END CLUB. MIL J. CLEAI.'S TEOPIIiES. The West End Rowing Club opened the 1922-23 season on iSnfurdav, when pair oar trials for trophies presented by Mr. J. Cleal were rowed. Eleven crews competed—an excelent entry for so early in the season. The course was from the Reclamation to the. clubhouse, and splendid water conditions prevailed. The racing was keen throughout, anil some elope and exciting finishes were witnessed. The various beats resulted :— First Heat.—.T. C Courtney and TV. McCredie, 4s, beat A. W. Xewdlck ami F. A. Trcvarthen, 4s. Second Heat.—A. M. Spencer and It. BYaser. 10s. beat J. C. Gulliver and A. TV. Rawlinson, 10s. ; Third Heat. —\V. Conway and E. Walsh, Fourth ileal. —T. Ryan and J. Johnson, scr., beat W, Wright and A. Hunter. 3s. l- - irui Meat.—.l. Davies nnd F. Edwards, 2s. beat C. V. Nleklln and A. ltecvev, Cs. I First Semi-final. —J. .7. Francis nnd - D. L. ; Fnmrls, I2s. met B. Courtney and MeCrei die, 4s, and suffered defeat by a good . length. Second Semi-final.—T. H.vnn and J. John- . son. Rcr.. met Spencer and Fraspr. 10s. The handicap pair made the most of their start. It was a great go, won by a few feet after a hard spurt. Third Semi-final.—T. Ryan and J. .Tohnson, scr., met ,T. Dawes aud V. Edwards. 2s. ■ Kyan got away with a good start from Dawes. Both crews rowed hard and kept together until the wharf was reached, whes i Ryan gradually drew away, winning by ; about one leugth. ; Final.—C. J. Courtney nnd W. McCredte, 4s, met T. Kyan and J. Johnson, ecr. Both . crews got away in good style, but Ryan's . crew won comfortably.
