Tuesday. The activity in clovers is briskly maintained, and there has been some substantial business, particularly in white clover. The agricultural returns just published ■bow that tbere are only 802,8131b of white, compared with 512.4801b lust year. It is reported that the briskness Is due to American detaaud, hut it Is rather significant that It should synchronise with official returns showing a low yield. Lμ to 200/ per ewt, f.o.b. South Island, for ■maehluedressed. has been paid, and up to 1158/ for farmers' undressed, making values to farmers from 1/ to 1/G per lb. Red clover is also in the boom, although valuee to farmers show little advance, on account of merchants having held stocks with which they are meeting the demand. It is understood that English inquiry is the cause of the briskness, and up to 125/ per cwt foi machine-dressed has been paid. Oats are firmer, due to Home Inquiry for A grade, and Australian inquiry for B prade. t'p to 8/41 f.o.b. Senfh Island for A grade and 3/li for B grade has been paid, the equivalent of 2/7* and 2/4} to farmers. Potatoes are dull, and small lots have passed at f6 10/ f.o.b.
