FEVER IN PLANTS.
PARASITES AND TEM»BBATURE
LONDON, October 12
Two South African botaniati, Dr. and Mrs. Pole-Evans, in the course of «n investigation on behalf of the South African Government, in •connection with the export of South African c.itrus fruits, have made an important discovery. Experiments with oranges end grapefruit in London showed a definite rise in the temperature of plant-tissue when infected with a parasitic fungus. This has never boen previously detected in the rase of plants, which Iβ remarkable, eince it i« Analogous to the fevw that follows ou (he infection ot animals. The discovery not only opens up a new field for research on plant pathology, ■>ut it has a direct bearing on the problem of fruit storage am! transport.— (Renter.)
