MEETING OF OBJECTORS.
PROPOSED SUBURBAN DESTRUCTOR j A meeting of objectors to the proposal to establish a destructor in tne Mount Eden district was held at the terminus yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. Buchanan presiding ove-f an attendance of several hundred. He sa,id they ot>pected to being committed to an expenditure of £5000 for the purchase of a site for a destructor without the ratepayers first being consulted on the matter. Other speakers were Councillor W. ... Hammill. ex-Councillor W. H. N'agle. Messrs. A. Hall-Skelton and E. Richards. It was stated that Mr. Skelton had it on good authority that the proposal had not a chance of being put through in the "Washing-up Bill," as *__ members were prepared to "stonemall" the measure. After further discussion the following motion was declared, carried unanimously: —""lhat having in view the explanation of the Mayor that it was necessary to deal with the matter of the purchase of a site for the p-o-wised des'rnct-.r. the ratepayers present are of the opinion: (a) That the council committed a grave error of judgment in not taking the ratepayers into their confidence before committing them to the purchase of i'iy site for a destructor to deal with rubbish other than that of the borough of Mount Eden; (bl that while not objecting to the principle of a destructor for dealing with the rubbish of the .borough, ! they strongly oppose the proposal to allow rubbish to be carted through the district from all the surrounding districts: (c) that the proposed site is in too close proximity to a school and a derwely-roni'late.l and ever-cro-vi. - rv.rtion of both Mount Eden and Mount -i-bert. and would be offensive to the inhabitants and property owners and as-ainst the best interests of the health of th" children: (cD that the Council should cancel the agreement to purchase I the property and then confer with other local bodies with a. view to acquiring a more isolated*, less extensive and expensive property, and. if necessary acquire =,ich under the Public Works. Act: (c) that the meeting approves of the steps already taken in opposing the scheme. I and pledi.es itself to use every legitimate effort to .prevent the Council erecting a destructor on the proposed site, or a.iv other site within the borough without first submitting the matter to the ratepayers."
